Kenya Peaberry (Kenya)
This peaberry is grown on the slopes of Mount Kenya, an area north of Nairobi that has a favourable climate and rich soils. Using a blend of SL28 and Ruiru 11 Arabica varieties, this coffee is sun-dried on flat beds, which adds a tangy flavour.
Peaberry, also known as 'Caracoli', gets its name from the fact that, unlike other coffee beans, only one of the two seeds is fertilised, meaning that the single seed grows without anything to flatten it. The oval (or peaberry) form is relatively rare, making it a sought-after product; only about 5% of all coffee beans are harvested in this form. They are considered better for roasting because of their round shape, which minimises sharp edges and allows easier movement through the roasting chamber. The main advantage of peaberry beans is that they have been very carefully selected according to their shape and size, which guarantees optimal quality and visually uniform coffee.
